Learning Objectives
This course is designed for System i or System z application developers who will use Enterprise Generation Language to build Web applications using IBM Rational Business Developer software.

Who should attend:
Anyone directly related to Web-enabling legacy applications including: application developers, application architects, team leaders, and system administrators.

Prerequisites:
Before taking this course, students should have:
 Experience building applications using a procedural language such as RPG, COBOL, or other 4GLs
 Familiarity with Web applications
 Knowlege of SQL for database access.
 Understanding of the multi-tier architecture of a J2EE Web or enterprise application is helpful; detailed knowledge of J2EE     topics is not required
 Experience using a product in the IBM WebSphere Studio family, including testing programs using the WebSphere test     environment

Objectives:
After completing this course, students should be able to:
 Describe the parts that comprise an EGL project
 Create an EGL web application
 Access relational data from an EGL program
 Describe how to use build descriptors for the EGL generate and prepare processes
 Generate and deploy COBOL load modules for z/OS or
 Generate and deploy RPG load modules for i/OS

Agenda:

Day 1 (Classroom):

 Introduction to EGL
 What is JSF?
 n-tier architecture with JSF and EGL
 EGL Web project features
 EGL Web project structure
 EGL Database Access
 Page Designer support for EGL
 Development of an EGL with JSF Web application built using IBM Rational Business Developer

Day 2 (Lab):
 Reviewing previous day concepts
 Hands on lab - Build a small web application using EGL and JSF to learn to code for the web.

Day 3 (Lab):
 Reviewing previous day concepts
Hands on lab - Create, consume, deploy, test and use externally created Web Services using EGL.
Hands on lab - Call external programs in another language (such as Java, COBOL,and RPG) from EGL
 Wrap-up

Day 4-5 (Mentoring):
Putting it all together and starting development of your own EGL-enabled application.
We will assist your team in customizing any aspect of the application within the two days.
